The coastal village of Hopkins,

located just eight miles south of Dangriga and four miles off the Southern Highway,

Is a quaint little fishing village with a population of about 1,500 villagers living within a five-mile spread. The village offers breath-taking views of the popular Maya Mountain Range which is home to the Cockscomb Basin and houses the world’s only Jaguar Preserve. With the tropical waters of the Caribbean Sea at its side, it’s the perfect combination of relaxation and adventure in the heart of Belize.

The residents of Hopkins are as friendly and hospitable as all others that call this beautiful country “home”. Many make a living as their forefathers did, fishing and selling their catch to locals and tourists alike. Like many other Belizeans, many Hopkins natives have branched out into the growing tourism industry seeking employment with local resorts.

Hopkins has everything, from a lazy day of relaxation on the beach to swimming in the beautiful waters along the shore, or snorkelling and diving the Great Blue Hole, or even deep sea fishing and rainforest hiking in the Maya Mountains; whatever your interest, we’ve got you covered! Though there are many vibrant events hosted in Hopkins, the village comes alive annually celebrating Garifuna Settlement Day on November 19th and Hopkins day, its own national holiday, celebrated in the month of July. On a daily basis, visitors can enjoy Garifuna drumming first-hand and even delve into making the drums from start to finish. If you’re into the great outdoors, then you’re in the right place! Hopkins is the ideal place to experience the Garifuna Culture in all its glory – from a showcase of food, to music and live drumming – you are sure to become fascinated with the wide scope of activities that await you here.

Whether your trip is for business or pleasure, Hopkins is sure to lure you in with its laid-back and easy-going atmosphere. There’s no shortage of cultural experience and with Belize having a sub-tropical climate, everyday is the best time for a visit! A trip to Hopkins is much more than simply saying you visited the place, it’s an opportunity to experience traditional Garifuna living. With its rustic charm and enthralling cultural tourism, Hopkins has earned its place as one of the friendliest villages in Belize!
